Solar Power Banks have been an essential part of my life for over a decade now. When im not running my SEO Agency, im outdoors. The technology has evolved into two leading form factors. The first is a smartphone sized single panel power bank with one solar panel, and the other is also a smartphone sized power bank with detachable solar panels. There are other larger devices on the market that we purchased and tested, however during our real world tests, they simply didn’t measure up to what we needed at home, camping, backpacking or otherwise.

All of the best solar power banks 2021 come in the same basic recipe and similiar design. A battery pack attached to a solar panel(s). The difference between the best and worst devices is in the detail and implementation.

We have only included the best devices in this list, so you can’t go wrong with any of these devices. Your decision will be based on how you will use the power bank. At home? Camping? Need water resistant design?

Some of the best solar power banks are able to fully charge your smartphone up 10 times, others, only 2 or 3 times. Some are so rugged, that we literally were able to drive over one with a car, others should not be exposed to water. Some are able to charge multiple devices (up to 4) at once via USB and wireless recharging, some can just just charge two devices at once. Some are also fitted out with handy features like a compass and a light.

Our ‘best solar power banks 2021’ list weighs up Portability, Durability, Solar Recharge Speed, Battery Capacity and added features of every solar power charger and really gave each one a run for their money.

We independently purchased and tested the 20 best rated solar power banks on the market and road-tested them in the real world in every possible circumstance you would need a portable solar charger and we may earn an affiliate commission.

Road Test Results

Our pick for overall best solar power bank is the Blavor 10000 mAh Qi Wireless portable charger. I have to be honest. This BLAVOR 10000 mAh portable solar power bank really didn’t look like anything special before we purchased it and ran it through its paces. The design seems so simple that we were a little perplexed why it was amazon’s top rated solar bank. We couldn’t initially understand why it was Amazon’s best selling and rated one of the best solar power banks in America / USA.

The 10000 mAh was initially a concern because other portable solar chargers were showing off impressive figures of 25000 mAh with 3 USB output ports, and other fancy features.

Now, we took it out on a 3 day camping trip with lot of hiking, and 3 weeks of general home use. What can we really say about this beauty…we love it!

The 10000 mAh power bank battery pack capacity turned out to be more than enough for everything we threw at it. 2 phone recharges, 1 laptop and 1 gopro. The real winning spec here is its lightweight portability, compass (handy feature) and overall simple nature. The wireless charging pad works the best of any of the power banks tested. This has now turned into a go-to solar power bank for the majority of our uses. It turns out that simplicity and portability is key in the world of solar energy.

yes, its solar panel is slow to charge the power bank(as with all solar panels of this size), but we let it sit in the bright midday sun for a few hours each day and it regained enough each day for us to be impressed. It only has 1 USB output for recharging your tech, but with the wireless recharging capability means you can fully charge 2 devices simultaneously, so this design didn’t negatively impact our real world tests.

Would I Purchase Again:

Yes. This has turned into my go-to solar power bank for most of the occasions where I need an external power source. Home, office, camping, backpacking or simply needing a portable light in my backyard. This thing is always on hand. This BLAVOR portable solar charger power bank is definitely the best value for money device you can buy and for us, it is the best solar power bank 2021. Period.

Road Test Results

!The 25000 mAh battery really is impressive and had to be in our list as the most durable and clearly one of the best solar power banks 2021 has to offer. We really put it through its paces during our road-test and didn’t even put a dent in its overall power bank capacity. 2 iPhone X, 1 samsung galaxy, GoPro, Laptop, 1 light were all charged one time and this solar charger power bank still had plenty of juice left.

The ability to use multiple outputs and the wireless charger to charge our devices essentially meant we never had to wait for another device to charge before plugging in our phone.

The recharge rate via cable was also bloody fast here. Their claim of 50% Faster Recharge was dubious at first, but after several tests at home, we can confirm the recharge rate is accurate: 4A dual USB ports (Type C included) provides the fastest overnight recharge time; 8 hours for a full charge.

The only downside with this portable solar charger is the weight of the unit. Surprisingly heavy at 585 grams. Although this wasn’t an issue for our road tests during camping, hiking and home use, those who are extremely tight on weight savings for long hiking trips may find an issue with this.

Did we mention we literally ran over thing thing with a car to see if its IP67 rating held true? Well, it sure does! Not even the solar panel was damaged. This thing really is bullet-proof. Did I hear you say “USA! USA!”

Would I Purchase Again:

Yes. The durability and IP67 rating is the standout here. This is geared towards people who really expect to be going on a rough and wet bushwalk, or world war 3. If you want one of the best solar power banks 2021, you’ll be hard pressed going past this one.

Road Test Results

We’ve seen plenty of the best solar power banks that boasted to be a genuine and stand-alone torch and light source, however they genuinely disappoint and are more of an addon. Not this one!

This GoerTek 25000 mAh Solar Power Bank has one amazing light! or 36 LED lights in reality.

We ended up going back to this great unit on our 3 day backpacking trip in America / USA as our general torch and light source. At one point, we had 3 iPhone X plugged in AND using the light at the same time. This portable solar charger really impressed us. As expected the 25000 mAh battery is more than most people will ever really need. We ended up finally depleting it after having to charge an iPhone X nine times. That really was impressive. The solar panels recharge was on-par with other similiar single solar panel power banks.

It is also heavy though, same as other large battery solar chargers. It also only has one USB input(no USB-C). The IPX7 gives you a extra durability and some level of waterproofing, so it’ll be fine in puddles of water and a toilet bowl, but I wouldn’t go chucking it in a lake. The little backpack hook is sturdier than most other models we tested also so is perfect for a backpacking trip. We loved this most as the best solar charger for backpacking.

Would I Purchase Again:

Yes. Even just as a standalone light source for camping. This proved to be a very effective hub for a light source and power bank to fully charge multiple devices and phones at once at night in our tent.

Again, the simple design is a winner here and is a key reason we have this as one of the best solar power banks in 2021.

I do a fair bit of camping around America / USA. Serious camping. No toilets, no amenities, just me and the trees and snakes and…sun and water. It doesn’t make sense for me to carry around several heavy power banks that can only recharge using solar very slowly (around 100 hours for 25000 mAh).

The holy grail for me was to find a solar power bank that could actually recharge its battery pack using the solar panel fast enough in 1 day to get me substantial juice to recharge my phone at very least while also handling harsh American conditions I come across.

Enter the king of portable solar chargers for camping that we tested. The FEELLE 25000 mAh solar power bank.

This thing really surprised us. 4 solar panels with 1000mA solar charging rate meant that we were able to recharge the battery bank completely using solar more than 3 times as fast as the other units tested.

It’s big when the solar panels are unfolded (obviously). When its folded up, the unit is surprisingly small for what it offers. Although still quite heavy and chunky, this serves a different purpose than other solar banks. This offered us a genuine opportunity to use solar power for all of our devices(we even tested it on a small USB fridge).

With one full charge using the four solar panels, we were able to fully charge our iPhone 8 times.

We impressive part? 26 hours to a full recharge using solar panels only(in direct summer sun). This was 4 times faster than the other units tested. So, this wasn’t just an emergency solar power bank. This is now our go-to solar charger for most of our devices when camping.

Although there is no wireless charging pad on this unit, this was not a big deal because we found that it was always being used as the solar generator ‘hub’ for our entire crew. It has dual USB ports (2.1A) for its output which charged our iPhone and samsung android phone in 2 hours. It’s also waterproof with an IPX7 durability rating. This is one of the best portable solar panels on the market today.

Would I Purchase Again:

Yes. For the person that wants to really go off-grid camping, this is the solar power bank for you. Great peace of mind due to having a genuine solar generator with me, rather than just a backup solar charger like the rest. We love the design, the case and its overall effectiveness for camping, so it’s no wonder we rated this one of the the best solar power banks in 2021.

Specifications

Battery : 26800 mAh

Max Solar Panel Current: 300mA

Waterproof Rating: IPX4 (splash proof)

Road Test Results

This GRDE Power Bank stood out to us because of its highest battery rating (26800 mAh) of any of the portable solar chargers we purchased. We were able to charge our tech gear(iPhone, gopro, laptop, torch) the same amount of times are the other 25000 mAh power banks. So, the extra 1800 mAh battery really shouldn’t factor into your buying decision.

What should factor in is the fact that this solar bank is another rock solid product. With wireless charging and 3 USB ports to recharge your tech, we successfully recharged all of our technology at once. The unit didn’t feel hot and seemed to comfortably handle the load.

The 28 LED flashlight is not quite as bright as the GoerTek, however, like the GoerTek it still amazed us just how handy this all-purpose light was for our camping trips around America and even just around our house when we need a torch.

Due to the slightly bigger battery, this unit is the heaviest in its range and like most of the competition, only has 1 USB input (no USB-C) to recharge the unit from.

The solar panel recharge rate is on-par with the rest at 300mA, so it is simply there for emergency use. We left it in the bright summer sun for a few hours per day, and it regained enough juice for us to notice.

If you need every little bit of battery you can fit in 1 solar power bank, this is definitely one of the best high capacity solar power banks money can buy.

Would I Purchase Again:

Yes. Simply for the massive battery. This is undoubtedly the best portable solar power bank we tested. if you need all the juice you can get and a great light, buy this beauty now. This comes with a manufacturer electronics warranty like all other devices listed here.

Road Test Results

Sometimes bigger is better. Our ‘best solar power banks’ list wouldn’t be complete without the granddaddy of portable solar power banks. This BLAVOR 20000 mAh solar power bank has a whopping 5 solar panels! 4 of these solar panels are detachable if you want to increase the portability and only have 1 solar panel.

At an amazing 1300 mAh solar recharge rate, this is the largest unit in this size range we found, and oh how glad I was to find and use this baby.

Similar to the 4 solar panel FEELLE portable solar power bank, this is a genuine solar generator, and not just an emergency solar power source. This recharged itself from 0% to 100% in 18 hours of full direct sunlight. Very impressive! This makes it a genuine off-grid solution for long term campers.

Although this power bank didn’t have any waterproof or water resistant rating, we actually left it out in the rain for a few hours to see what happens. The USB inputs and outputs are all recessed with a rubber cap and the unit worked fine after a drenching. I wouldn’t chuck it in a puddle though.

Unlike most other solar power bank products, this unit has 2 USB inputs (USB-C is available). You also get 2 USB outputs and wireless output.

It is the largest and bulkiest design of our top products, however, why we included this one is because we found ourselves using it over and over again at home as our day to day cell phone and tech charger. The solar panel recharge rate was so impressive that we simply left this out all day, every day, then plugged in our phone every few days. This now provides about 70% of my phone charging requirements. This is one of, if not the best portable solar panels on the market today.

Of course, it was just as handy on our camping trips in the USA. The light is small but still handy and the compass is a great little inclusion.

Overall, another high quality amazing solar charger that you can’t go wrong with.

Would I Purchase Again:

Yes. Actually I already bought another one. The 5 solar panels are large enough to charge my phone from 0-100% every 2 days(in direct sunlight), yet the entire unit is portable enough to move around with you from the car to backyard to camping. This is definitely one of our favourites and right up there with the best solar power banks 2021.

We really gave all 20 tested products a run for their money and each of the 6 products listed here are most definitely the best solar power banks of 2021 and are a great buy for those looking for that extra juice for their technology charging.

Try to keep in mind which devices & products you need to charge and how often you will need to charge your devices. Also consider if you want a emergency portable solar charger (one solar panel) or if you want a genuine solar generator (multiple solar panels) that can recharge itself using the sun in a couple of days only. Oh, and don’t forget to factor in how much direct sunlight you get wherever you are in the world. Southern parts of the USA America get an amazing amount of strong direct sunlight that charge these power banks fast!

Our list gives you real-world tests so you can quickly decide what is best for you.

Frequently Asked Questions for the Best Solar Power Banks

What is a solar power bank?

A solar power bank is a device that includes a battery (of varying capacity) and a solar panel(s) of varying size. The solar panel recharges the attached battery using energy from the sun.

How does a solar power bank work?

Solar power banks are an environmentally friendly charger. They collects energy from the sun and then converts that energy into electricity which is stored in the battery (power bank). This electricity is used for charging electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops, cameras and many more devices.

Can a solar power bank also be charged by a regular power outlet?

Yes, all devices can be charged from a regular power outlet / wall charger / wall outlet.

What to Consider When Choosing a Solar Power Bank

deciding which of the best solar power banks is easy:

1) Battery Capacity: Do you need high capacity to charge your devices? What devices do you want to charge and how often. example: a 10000mAh power bank will charge a 4000mAh smartphone 2.5 times.

2) Portability: How portable do you need the solar charger to be? overall sizes and weight varies a lot between our top picks.

3) Durability: What conditions will the solar power bank be out through? Do you need genuine waterproofing or just splash proofing to make it a little water resistant? Will you be using it exclusively at home, outdoors(camping) or both?

4) Solar Recharge Speed: Do you just need solar recharging for emergency situations? (slow charging with 1 solar panel) or do you need to be able to recharge the power bank fast(faster charging with multiple solar panels)?

5) Features: Do you need features such as a strong light, compass and carrying clips? Do you intend to use it as a wireless phone charger? Do you need to charge multiple device simultaneously?

What Devices Can You Charge With A Solar Power Bank?

You have the ability to charge practically any technology that you would normally charge via USB. Some examples: iPhones, Samsung smartphone, Android smartphones, laptops, camera’s, lights.

For solar power banks that have wireless charging capability, you also have the ability to charge your phone that has wireless charge capability

How We Ranked the Best Solar Power Banks Models

We ran real world tests for 3 weeks in every scenario mentioned(home, camping, backpacking based on 5 criteria:

1) portability

2) durability (waterproofing & water resistance)

3) solar recharge speed

4) battery life / capacity

5) extra features

What are the disadvantages of solar energy?

Solar power banks that have only a small solar panel surface area (single panel) can take up to 100 hours to recharge completely using direct sunlight. This makes these devices solar charging capability only for emergency use. You should not rely on a device like this as your only energy renewal source because it takes a long time to charge the batteries.

Also, if you are in a part of the world that doesn’t receive much direct strong sunlight such as Northern parts of the USA America, these solar chargers will take longer to charge compared to southern parts of the united states of america.

How long do the best solar power banks last?

How long is a piece of string? The life of any solar power bank depends on its build quality and how often it is used. All lithium-ion batteries will deplete after a certain amount of recharges. We have been using some of our power banks for 10 years, some only lasted 1 year, however all items we have recommended here would be expected to last at least 5 years with regular use as they are all the devices you can buy.

How do I charge my solar bank?

Option 1: Charge the battery with a standard wall outlet.

Option 2: Charge the battery with the solar panels. Your solar power bank will recharge with any sunlight. However, for the fastest recharge, it needs direct sunlight when the sun is highest in the sky (11am-3pm is best in most countries)

Are solar power banks worth it?

Without a doubt, Yes! This is one of the best technology investments we make. That’s why we have been using solar power banks for over a decade now. You get free energy, portable power from the sun with this device. What more can you ask for?

Do solar chargers really work?

Yes! Modern solar technology has come leaps and bounds. It’s so good and cost-effective now, that you can literally carry a solar generator device such as the BLAVOR 5 panel solar power bank in your pocket now for $50. Portable power in your pocket really works so well in 2021.

Which Phones Are Compatible With A Solar Power Bank?

All cell phones / mobile phones / smartphone device which normally charge with USB are compatible. For solar power banks that have wireless charging capability, you can also charge your phone that has wireless charge capability (most modern cell phones).

How Many Available charging Ports Does the Solar Power Bank Have?
This depends in the respective devices and models. Minimum is 1 port. Some devices listed here have 3 charging ports (micro-USB and USB-C).

Number Of Times It Can Charge An Average Device

This depends on the battery size. For example a 10000mAh power bank device can charge your 4000mAh smartphone 2.5 times. Whereas a 25000mAh power bank can charge your smartphone or iPhone 6.25 times.

How long does the Solar Charging take?
This depends on the Battery Capacity, the Solar Charging Rate & the intensity of the sunlight.

Example: the BLAVOUR 10000mAh solar power bank has a battery capacity of 10000mAh and a solar charging rate of 180mAh.

10000 / 180 = 55.5 hours to fully recharge.

This time is dependant on the angle and strength of the sunlight.

What We Learned About Solar Power Banks

Although they all look quite similiar, it is crucial to pick the device based on your requirements which we mentioned earlier. The best solar power banks might differ for you.

Consider especially the solar charging time required to get your power pack fully juiced, because if you need to quickly recharge the battery packs with only 1 solar panel, you’re going to be waiting days. Consider the mAh battery capacity of all the lithium battery devices you need to charge.

interesting article. I already have a BLAVOR 10000mAh which I honestly love. Im going camping soon, so I recently bought the BLAVOR 20000mAh Five Panel Solar Power Bank from amazon after reading your review. I was unsure if it would be too bulky, but to be honest, the extra bulkiness seems to be worth it for the faster solar charge time. Cool article anyway. thanks

Thanks Lisa. We were also concerned about the potential bulkiness of the BLAVOR 20000mAh Five Panel Solar Power Bank BEFORE we bought it and road-tested it. To be honest, like you said, the extra bit of size didnt bother us for our use cases. We still use it every single day here for our home charging (phones etc), and camping trips.
